Weighted toys are there to wake and shake the proprioceptive sensory system (also called the sixth sense) so that the brain gets all the cues it needs to function properly. Just like we see through our eyes (which are receptors), thanks to proprioception we know where our body is because of receptors that run through our muscles and joints.
Babies sometimes struggle with one of two things (or both depending on the days) and will benefit from playing and engaging with Chloe and Clark.
- Sensory overload: Too much noise, attention and colourful toys can stress a baby’s nervous system causing them to cry continually, avoid eye contact or act irritably
- Lack of body awareness: Proprioception is our body’s ability to know where it is at any given time (body awareness). It includes the sense of our limbs, effort, force and heaviness
Chloe and Clark are excellent at stimulating the under or overwhelmed proprioceptive system and can channel feelings of calmness and relaxation.
